Peace! ✌️

4.5 stars. I struggled halfway through the book but once I continued reading Yuka’s perspective, it went smoothly from there on out. This novel isn’t as good as Confessions but Kanae Minato is an excellent writer. This book left me thinking holy shit at the most unexpected moments. Highly recommended. Would love to reread this book one day.

5 school girls were playing at a park when one of them, Emily, was lured away and killed. At the time Japan had a 15 year statute of limitations  on murder. Emily's mother swears to get penance on the 4 girls if the murderer is not found before those 15 years run out. Now the girls are adults and the 15 year mark is rapidly approaching, and no one can outrun the past.

I absolutely loved this!! Both the plot and the characters were well thought out and developed, and it never felt rushed, even though it was only 240 pages. It was dark without being gory, and engaging without being far-fetched. The cultural perspective that this book offered was also really fascinating.

If you have not read Kanae Minato yet, I need you to know that you are severely missing out! She has such a unique storytelling style that helps create thrillers that are so different from anything I have read. Both this book, and Confessions, absolutely blew me away. I wish her other books were translated into English , because I would be snatching them up right now!

Yap.

Waw.

But here's the problem.

Not as good as Confessions, but very gripping. I really hope more of her works are translated into English.

A construção profunda dos personagens me surpreendeu positivamente.

Might have been better read with eyeballs rather than ears. It was hard to figure out what was going on, and especially at the end I had no idea who was having conversations, as the people having the convo weren't named. It was an interesting story, but at the same time I felt held at arm's length. I wasn't invested in any of the characters. The second and third stories were my favorite. The last one should have been full of revelations to make me gasp, but I can barely piece what the story was, or even the motive for the crime.

I read Confessions by Kanae and absolutely loved it. This one didn’t pack as much of a punch and I was pretty bored starting about halfway through. It felt very repetitive and it seemed to lead to nowhere. I still find Kanae’s writing to be amazing and I will definitely be checking out any other translated works by her!
