I read this book back in middle school and I wanted to know if it would hold up. I really enjoyed this re-read. I find this book pretty dense in a really rewarding way. The author just throws you in and trusts that the reader will understand the setting and the medieval terminology. I remember enjoying that aspect a lot as a young reader. This book is also pretty high concept for a middle grade novel. Our main character, Arthur, is given a stone which shows him another story about another famous Arthur. Their stories parallel each other and the "actors" in the stone are played by people from his own life. I think the parallels are brilliantly conveyed and I think that our main Arthur is a greal lead. He is a great mix of introspective and determined. I will probably continue with this trilogy because I do not remember what happens next.

Very boring and not well written. It does read like the diary of a 10 year old boy

One of my favoite King Arthur books. There's so many ways to write a King Arthur novel, and this was the perfect example of a well-written epic tale.

It took me a little while to get into this one, but I am glad that I stuck with it. Very well written, and a unique look at the Arthurian legend as it presents it through the eyes of a late 12th century early 13th century boy growing up on the Welsh marches.

The conceit of this story is that the main character is given a seeing stone by Merlin, through which he learns about the original story of Arthur. There are some parallels between what he sees in the stone and what happens to him in his real life, but it is unclear to Arthur what the exact links are.

The true strength of this book, though, are the research the author has done on the period but even more than that the emotion conveyed among the characters. The characters are very believable and act according to their personality traits, not simply for the author to move the story along.

I plan to get a hold of the other two in this series and to keep reading more by the author.
