I highly recommend. It’s a beautiful story, woven into its complex and well-told historical context. Most of what I know about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict comes from this book. I just re-read it because my book club is reading it on my recommendation.

Pros: I learned ALOT about the complex history between Palestine and Israel and how nuanced  the conflict is. Id call this book a history book, and I enjoy history so I appreciated that.  I enjoyed hearing about the varying perspectives. Its a good starting part for understanding this situation.

Cons: It takes a very neutral and logical perspective so you dont get the emotion behind all the tragedy which I think is an important element that is lost. Its also a bit repetitive. Lastly the book is a bit misleading based on the description as you expect the book to involve alot of conversation between Bashir and Dalia but really that is only about 50 pages give or take and the conversations had are the same at each interaction. This was disappointing as I was expecting more personal perspectives and dialogue over the historical overview

This book doesnt finish tied with a bow as obviously it was written over a decade ago and the story is very much unfinished. Not a pro or a con but I think important headspace for starting the read.

There is so much history that I think most people are unaware of, especially given current circumstances regarding this area.

Sandy Tolan does a fantastic job of sticking to the facts, citing the facts, but also making it incredibly readable.

It was a bit slow to start. Mostly delving into the history. I was intrigued by the story between Salia and Bashir and when I was in their story, the story seemed almost too fast.

I highly recommend his read, regardless of where you may stand on current issues, I think the histor  of the land brings it into a more detailed perspective
