A variety of stories and art styles about Midnighter. Most of them fell flat, but the one where Midnighter needs to find a stray cat was pretty good.

Does Midnighter have it in his contract to talk about his abilities before every fight? Like, come on we get it. It's great that he finally has opponents here that he can't defeat so easily. And Apollo comes back to rescue him, finally, that's all I needed.

This book is so good. I'm so glad DC's doing a miniseries in the fall and that Rebirth didn't cause just another random cancellation.

Confirmed for me that Midnighter is always better with Apollo. (At least with writers who know what to do with Apollo.)

Really liked a couple of these issues (the Brian K Vaughn one, where the story started at the end and went backwards and the one where Midnighter rescued a kids cat) but most of them were kind of meh unless he was interacting with Apollo or one of his friends. The suicide squad stuff was pretty boring and boooooo on skinny Amanda Waller. The Wall is fat and looks like a wall and is terrifying as fuck and skinny Amanda Walker is none of those things. No idea if they ever go back to an Amanda Waller that looks like Amanda Waller but I hope so. (We’ll always have the DCAU.)

1) Midnighter, Vol. 1: Out ★★★½

2018 pride reads #3
lgbt+ rep: gay mc, gay side characters

There are so many reasons this volume is a step-up from the first. The plot is much tighter in this volume, meaning that I read it much quicker and enjoyed it far more. The side characters were all really good as well, the stand-outs easily being the Suicide Squad and Apollo.

I didn't mention this in my review of the first volume, but I really enjoyed the art style in both volumes, particularly the creative ways the artists would work around graphic violence.

Overall, a really solid volume that I would highly recommend, even to those who were lukewarm or flat out just didn't like the first volume.
