I haven't read The Calling series so I wasn't familiar with the characters or premise of this spin-off series. I have to say that I enjoyed this book more as I read the books that followed it. It is in this book that we meet the secondary characters that will take over the series Diana Reyes and Jesus Hernandez. This book stands alone as we meet Nemesis, Goddess of Vengeance and Justice on earth as FBI Special Agent Helene Alexander. She and her new partner,SA Miguel Sanchez have to find and apprehend the serial killer known as "The Butcher". Can a human teach a Goddess that Justice and Vengeance aren't always the same thing and the ends don't always justify the means. I don't know but he can and does teach her a few things about love. This is a super, sexy paranormal romantic suspense novel.

I really really wanted to love this book. Not much is written about the goddess Nemesis, and I wanted to see what the author was going to do with her. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. Nemesis really didn't show much of her goddess side, but was constantly trying to repress it. I really wanted to see her go all goddess of vengeance on the bad guys and totally destroy them. Her abusive father, Zeus (another thing that I found disappointing) drove her from Mt Olympus to live among the humans, but if she looses sight of her mission she will become mortal and die. Her partner, Sanchez, was just too good to be true and I got a little tired of hearing about what a great guy he was.

The upside to the story was the case of the murders. They were intriguing and had an amazing concept behind them with a fantastic back story for the bad guys. With just enough information given throughout to keep the reader hooked and trying to figure it out before the characters did. If the book had concentrated on just the suspense and left the romance to the background I would have loved it. So this one gets an overall of 3 stars, 2 for the romance paired with 4 for the suspense.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

Caridad includes a bad guy and shows her readers his personality and why he’s a good choice for this book. Our author also gives her readers their paranormal fix – like reading a Sci Fi Criminal Minds. She was also smart in that we get to see some of Helene’s parents. She could have let them overtake the story – since it lends itself to the mythology of the story. But this is more than just about Helene so we get just enough to know what they’re like.

As I’m reading, I look down and couldn’t believe the page number – then I realize the story is nearing its conclusion. And I don’t want it to be over. The story is a whodunit that’s keeping me on the edge of my seat almost to the very end. The bad thing about reading on your lunch hour – instead of saying “one more bite”, you’ll be saying “one more page”. Then in the blink of an eye, the author puts in a scene that will really grab your attention and it leaves you with no choice but to read carefully so you don’t miss anything.

Caridad shows her readers that love can overcome a lot of obstacles if you are willing to make some sacrifices. Isn’t your happiness worth it? What would you give up to find total happiness? The good news is that this is part of a series so the second book, titled To Love or Serve, comes out on October 28.
