The book is heavily based on the life of the writer, Louisa May Alcott.
It is a coming-of-age book, which is one of my favorite genres.
We get to follow the lives of four sisters from childhood to womanhood.
They go trough a lot of emotions, hardship and happiness.

The book itself is a source of joy as in many moments it teaches us whats really important in this word, kindness and generosity.

The book feels very real and you can quite tell that its almost an autobiography because many of the emotions and struggles lived by the characters are very real and have been experienced by most of us.

Jo's character is also very important from the point of view of the feminist movement.
Creating a female character in the 19th century that is so out of the stereotypical norms of women of the time was a strong act of rebellion against the society.

This put me into a reading slump. The only reason I pushed to finish was to watch the movie. Overall, I felt the book lacked a plot, volume 1 more so than volume 2. In volume 1, every chapter is an individual story ending in a moral. The story is complete before moving on to the next character and chapter. In volume 2 the characters are older and start to fall in love and settle down, making it easier to read. I did not like the final couplings because they felt awkward. Looking back, I might have liked this book more if I read it as a child which is its primary audience.

I love the girls, some bits have really stuck with me. I love the writing style and how each chapter contains its own little story and moral. Very slow and very long, the last 100 pages had me bored.
