Jovita was an amazing freedom fighter. I love learning about women in history who are often overlooked.

Excellent book. I had never heard of the impressive Jovita before so it was very informative. I appreciated that there were several pages of text, giving more context to Jovita’s story and life. Included were actual pictures, further making the point that this book was about an actual person who was larger than life. There are many topics that can be drawn out and explored - gender roles, the relationship between religion and governments, and life during war to name a few. I loved the illustrations and the authors style was engrossing and provoked images, emotions, and places.

I really enjoyed this biography. The text was well written, and the illustrations were beautiful. I enjoyed the added historical note, and note from the author and illustrator as well.

Based on the memoirs of Jovita Valdovinos, a brave young woman who fought religious repression in Mexico. Using her wits and dressing in men's clothing, she led soldiers and stood up for her beliefs.

I really liked the art in this nonfiction picture book--it is so vivid and energetic. The storyline was interesting as well--but I think I appreciated it the most when I read the author's note about how the phrase "wore the pants" is used to denote courage and passion.
