I absolutely loved this novella. Mara seems very interesting and I feel like she's going to become a huge bad ass.
SpoilerIt kind of sucks major ass that she lost the love of her life, Julio. But I'm so happy that she saved a bunch of kids and found the rebellion camp.
I also found it interesting that Princess Elisa is mentioned, just briefly towards the end, in this novella. I have a feeling I'm going to get more about her. I can't wait to read the next novella.

Mara's strenght as a character is clear throughout the trilogy, but it was amazing seeing where she gets it from. I dare say that if there were to be a spinoff series, it would be amazing if it were focused on Mara's life. 5/5

Unlike the other two novellas which are prequels, this story is set smack in the middle of Girl of Fire and Thorns. The Inviernos are in full attack mode, setting fire to a village. Mara leads a small group of children to the safety of the rebel camp, but not without some losses of their own.

It's hard as a writer to do the worst to your characters. Some stories fail for that reason. Rae Carson doesn't flinch from the black moment, and Mara meets her challenge with the same unflinching courage she's demanded of the children.

I'm reading one novella a day before reading Crown of Embers on Sunday, and each one makes me more excited to get back to Elisa's story.

I'm really glad I read this novella before I started Bitter Kingdom. It details how Mara got to be at the rebel camp and what she had to endure to get there. While there were a few instances in the previous books where her past was hinted at, they weren't major. However there are more in The Bitter Kingdom and the somehow seem more relevant...

Mara is finally going to leave her village and defy her father. Together with Julio, the boy she loves, Mara will run away for a better life. Just as the two meet, the village is attacked. Julio and Mara work to evacuate as many of the children of the village as they can. She will lead these children through the mountains and to the group of rebels hiding there. Hopefully they can also help her save Julio, who was critically injured in the escape.

Again, this was a novella that provided background information on characters who don't get a lot of page time in the first book. I also have a feeling that Mara is going to be playing a much bigger role in the second and third books. This one did have some really good parts. It was also
Spoiler suitably tragic.
