Blackbird is about Nina, a woman who swears she saw a beast when she was younger. Her whole life, her family made fun of her and called her crazy. As an adult, she learns that she was right all along. Things she thought she knew, turn out to be lies.

This was a really cool concept. Essentially there are paragons. They are basically magicians/wizards with lots of money. They are in secretive cabals which seem a little cult like but unfortunately cabals were not explored as deeply as I would have liked. The magic system is connected to beautiful gems that each have a different spell inside. It seemed like the gems were hard to get but this was also not explained very deeply.

Things I loved: the art, the colors were incredible, magical atmosphere, the settings, Nina is beautiful, the gem magic system, this surprised me

Things I didn’t love: not enough development (yes, this is a comic so it makes sense to keep things brief, however, there were so many panels that felt unnecessary when I really just wanted to learn more about the world (mainly the cabals and magic)

While this isn’t a new favorite, I can see promise. I’m hoping that another volume will be released so I can learn more about this version of Hollywood.

This book was okay but it felt unfinished, like an early draft that hadn’t yet been polished. The art similarly felt like it was missing something too. The colour palette is fun and the covers are very cool, but the panels felt simplistic and generic. The plot seemed rushed and felt juvenile (not in a good way – I say this as someone who reads both YA and MG as an adult). A promising first issue but an unsatisfying continuation.

"Magic flows like water. Your heart is a fountain. Remember."

I really really wanted to love this, I absolutely adore Jen Bartel's art and was so excited to see she had done a graphic novel! Sadly the story was really disjointed and didn't explain things it should have. Though the premise was really interesting!

I rounded up but would probably give this a 2.5 stars. I was disappointed since the artwork is so beautiful but the story and characters just did not resonate with me. It was kind of filled with crappy people and the story just felt flat to me. Plus the ending was not satisfying at all. They definitely left a lot unexplained. But the artwork was at least pretty to look at lol

Ugh... Such beautiful artwork for such a messy story... I'm sorry, but I have nothing nice to say about how the story was told, how the characters were created and how the magic system was presented..

This book had so much potential that was just wasted. I only finished it because I wanted to see if it would fix any of the issues I had. Sadly, it did not. It's hard to understand the magic when the MC already knows about it somehow so it's not throughly explained. The transitions are terrible and the diaolgue is cringy. I picked it up because the cover was beautiful but it did not live up to the art at all.
