Love love love Maria. She's self aware most of the time even if she usually doesn't know what to do about her shortcomings and has really great insights on the trans experience. She's also hilarious and deeply relatable (for better or worse). I see a lot of myself in aspects of both her and James. The book didn't really have a satisfying ending, as admitted by the author, but I think the ending is true to the characters and true to reality.
As much as I wish to have had a trans fairy godmother step into my life and help unravel the great mystery of why I was such a miserable little shit for so many years, I'm not sure things would have turned out very differently or if I would have even been willing to listen.

The writing style may put some off, but I personally found it brimming with personality. Also the afterword is required reading.

I'll definitely be rereading this one at some point.
