The Red Pony

John Steinbeck

3.33 AVERAGE

Let's be honest, I read this because it is titled "The Red Pony" and it's short. It's also written by John Steinbeck, so you can guess what's going to happen to the pony. In any case, as is always the case with Steinbeck, it's well-written en easy to read. It doesn't have much of a continuous plot, but rather has four distinct though loosely connected short stories within the same setting. The stories revolve around a central theme prevalent throughout as the young protagonist learns about the difficulties and responsibilities of adulthood in the time period in which the story is set. Yes, the pony plays a role in that, but don't be disappointed to find out the pony is not actually the protagonist that shares its thoughts with the reader. Despite feeling a little unfinished and being a bit repetitive here and there with the language and dialogue, it's still Steinbeck and therefore worth reading, and it's one of his earliest works so all is forgiven. And it's short anyway, just like a pony.

disappointing for steinbeck, consider it more a collection of stories about a set of characters than a single novella

dude this book was sad
n also a lil explicit when it came to horse death?
my first Steinbeck n i gotta say: v interesting way to write a coming of age story. it was short but also in feel like not enough time had passed in between the 1st part of the book to the final part to really say if Jody really changed or not. it was a lot of trauma, for sure, but I feel like he wasn't am active participant in his own story to definitively say that he grew up
besides that, v engaging story! despite it being so short it does draw you in n keep you engaged but I think im gonna have to try another Steinbeck to see if I really like his stories

I forgot how sad this was! I adore any book to do with the strange and powerful bond between a child and their pet/an animal so I ate this uppp. Stienbeck ily

The message "everything dies eventually (except maybe trees)" dragged out over the course of 100 pages. This was the kind of book that makes me think "how awful was every other writer at the time that THIS is what we're considering 'classic'?"

a coming of age in which tragedy happens and life continues. beautifully so.
