I decided to take a chance on this novel, and I'm glad I did.

It's not gonna jump into my top ten books of all time and it's not a perfect novel, but the vibe and atmosphere carries this obscure gem a long way.

A tattooed man called Sue is part of a 'freak' circus that gets stranded in a small town after a storm. The story is progressing through the things that happen in the aftermath, while also going back in the past of the illustrated man.

I think I would have liked a longer story all in all, but I was still left satisfied when it was over and all was said.

I liked this book and found it entertaining and engrossing. It's got the right level of creepiness, the cast of characters is well written and the plot kept my attention.
Recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

A circus, a tattooed man named Sue and a cast of weird and wonderful characters. What more could you want from a book? Throw in a storm which displaces these characters to a confined setting and some strange goings-on and you’re bound to be intrigued.

For all these reasons, as well as that striking pink cover, I was itching to read Keith McCleary’s Circus + The Skin. When, upon further investigation, I read about Mr McCleary’s background, I knew that this would not be a boring read.

I received a free copy of Circus + The Skin from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley!

At first, I was not going to review this novel because I did not finish it. I got about halfway through this novel before putting it down and realizing it was not the book for me. However, I thought I would give a little feedback in case anyone else finds it helpful. Lately, I have realized that a first-person perspective is not my preferred style, and I tend to gravitate towards novels written in the third person. For me, the character has to be compelling to enjoy the first-person perspective, but Sue did not do it for me. This was definitely disappointing because my favorite setting is in the circus, and I was excited to jump into the story.

However, my main gripe was with the perspective and writing style, so I do not discourage anyone from picking up this book and trying it out. If these things are not a problem for you, then you might like it!

Has anyone else read this? What were your thoughts? <3

This book was a lot of fun. It’s a quick read, but the quality doesn’t suffer for its lack of length. McCleary tells an efficient, well-plotted mystery, and certain aspects of the resolution genuinely surprised me.
