3.5- Collins’ domains of power (Structural, Disciplinary, Cultural, and Interpersonal) provide a useful framework for the analysis of racism. Her reframing of “facts” as dependent on those in power rather than immutable truths lands well in the post-truth era. I also appreciate her emphasis on visionary pragmatism and everyday resistance to oppressive structures. That being said, this read as more of an intro-to-racism text than I had hoped (give this to your relative who still thinks racism comes only from those saying explicitly racist things), and I wish it was a bit deeper/meatier.

I think this is an excellent book. Very accessible even for those without a formal or higher education type familiarity with social justice. I would highly recommend this book as an excellent introduction to modern discussion about race.

informative reflective medium-paced
This was an excellent primer into different concepts related to systems of power (specifically around race but could be applied to other systems of power), media literacy, and activism.

If you're interested in either of these topics, I'd recommend this book to learn the theory behind color-blind racism, domains of power (structure, disciplinary, cultural, personal), private vs public spaces and how policies around these are not race-neutral, media criticism of race, teaching media literacy, and specialized resistance and visionary pragmatism as models for change and activism.

As it's been over a decade since it's been published, some references and arguments are no longer relevant or reflect prejudice that is no longer considered acceptable, but these are few. For the most part, the ideas in this book are timeless. The writing style also was more accessible, less academic, so it's a straightforward read.

Un livre à mettre entre toutes les mains ! Je suis une grande fan du travail de Patricia Hill Collins, et ce volume va certainement me guider dans la manière dont j'aborde l'enseignement.
