I tend to think I like this one less than the first two Allways books when I start reading it, but then I get towards the end, where it's all tender and weepy and charming, and I realize this may actually be my favourite of the three (but the Merry Hall books are still better). Certainly Nichols is a little less snippy than he often was, which is kind of a good thing, as it can get a bit tiresome, especially when he's snippy about women.

Not much gardening in this one, but lots of the saintly Miss Haslitt.

Too arch, too mawkish for me, but still rich with hints and promises of the brilliantly funny writing that came later in his career.
