Cunning Folk by Adam L.G. Nevill

Besides how grating the writing was (I have never read third-person omniscient before; apparently I hate it), there was far too much description for the simplest things. It felt like things were just happening to these people I have no reason to care about yet, and it also appears that the author has never spoken to a child before. I really thought I could push past these issues, but as soon as I read the words, "...the added humiliation of his wife needing to rescue him," I was done. Closed the book and am returning it to the library I borrowed it from.

It was a challenging read.  Is the main character going crazy?  Is he correct in his thoughts?  Are the neighbors innocent or guilty?  Are they what they seem to be or not? I am still not sure on what I think even though I have finished the book.

I wanted to give it 4.5 stars!!

I wasn’t sure about this book once I started getting into it and I admittedly had to put it down for a bit. However, once the foundation is set, I COULD NOT put it down. It becomes non-stop imagery of demented horrors and shocking events. I spent my Sunday going from 48% through it to 100%.

I would absolutely recommend this book to someone who enjoys folk horror, or really any horror for that matter, but be warned- once it’s got you, you’re not stopping until the end.

I only gave it four stars (truly a 4.5 for me) because it starts off so strong and compelling in the beginning, but some parts of the story telling, can get a little slower when the “stage is being set” so to speak. However, if my attention span hadn’t put a quick pause on that, this would easily have been 5 stars from me.

I don't know why it took me so long to finish this book when I really enjoyed it. Maybe because, ever since I tried reading the atrocity that was Anatomy: A Love Story, I've been in a bit of a reading slump and Let The Right One In did not help at all.

Anyway, there were so many things I loved about this book: the storyline, the folk magic and horror, the setting and feeling of being isolated with nowhere to run. It's also written in my writing style, so I love that about it even more. My head is aching so I don't have more to say, but it is one of the better Gothic Horror tales I've read this year.

The beginning was so slow but then it genuinely scared me I was so creeped out which doesnt happen to often. The ending was kinda nice like good for them (main guy and ancient god) you know?
Anyway if you like creepy folk horror and a lot of build up you will like this.
