When I was a young man, at the beginning of each year my parents would give me a daily devotional book for the upcoming year. Each page contained a simple life-lesson, a Biblical quote. For years I read those books, and now years later I look back fondly on them. They helped me to learn at an early age the importance of recognizing there are things bigger than me. I uncovered the joy of re-reading the same text multiple times to discover new meaning.

M. Sarki's Stamped Against the Night, these 68 pieces, have the same impact on me as those devotionals. Most of the works are one page in length - a handful of masterfully crafted sentences - and they impart a lifetime of experience and learning. I've read each work three times; new revelations are revealed at each reading.

Sarki's voice is wholly unique, but it resonates with me in the same way Sebald does. I was also fortunate enough to have read Schwartz's John the Posthumous a couple of weeks prior to reading this work. These two books call to and respond to each other in a way that echoes their brilliance and yet makes the reader appreciate each work's unique magnificence.

It's only fair and honest to divulge that I was fortunate enough to receive the uncorrected proof of this book from Sarki. He only asked for candid feedback directed to him - but I am proud to let both my small and excellent group of Goodreading friends know how fabulous this book is and encourage them to partake of Sarki's craft once it is published. I have many friends that have filters more refined than the ones I possess and I want to learn from what they take away from this book.
