Better than the first book but secondary to the second book. This book is the last in the books of the North trilogy. Overall they are enjoyable, but slightly difficult to read for me. Felt like there was a lot of missed opportunities for character development and to expand the plot more with more breath. Not the biggest fan of Glen cooks writing style but I do appreciate it. I will likely return to the series in the future. Pretty good overall. Decent book.

The third installment of [book:Chronicles of the Black Company|400924] as told by Croaker, the doctor and chronicler of the company. Croaker is a great character and is easily a favorite of mine.
This installment gives a greater look at past happenings, the who and the why and in my opinion wraps up, very well, things that needed closure.
It is very hard to write much more without giving things away-I loved it, and that is all.

I’m not too sure about this one. Cook really drills down in to the lore surrounding the villains, to the point that it feels like most of the main storyline is happening off screen. This isn’t helped by the book’s POV characters. There’s three of them, but two of them converge on Croaker’s narrative about a third of the way through the story, and after that it’s all Croaker’s story all through the book. The rest of the Company are kind of hanging around the edges of the story but they’re very much background characters. This is Croaker’s show from start to finish.
This isn’t a bad book at all, I’m glad I read it and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series. It just feels underwhelming due to the trilogy’s main narrative resolving largely off screen, and the title characters of the series being largely relegated to bit parts.
