The Coldest Touch (2021)

YA Paranormal Adventure Romance with queer vampires? Yes please!
Omgosh I loved this! It is as if the assignment was: "Take the best parts of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, but make it more wholesome, more inclusive, less problematic and more queer and sapphic" - and this story is successful at that! I love the world building, the loveable characters, the delightful and believable teenage angst, the crushes, and the mystery adventure! I want to have more! I dont know if the author is going to bring us more and make this into a series, but I NEED IT.

I fell hard for this book and loved seeing Elise come into her power, navigate grief and growing relationships.
Claire had such a complex existence and I enjoyed seeing her grow with each new experience, despite already being immortal and probably seeing so much of the world already.
I love the mentions of touch, especially the contrast of Jordan's body heat and Claire's otherworldly coolness. It added that little extra attention to detail that just drew everything together.
The diversity was amazing. We had different family dynamics, different ethnicities, different genders and various sexualitites. It felt layered and real. I really appreciate when a fantasy novel is fantastical and believable, especially in regards to the people that inhabit the world.
The only thing to throw me off was just the below wording:
"A Black boy, not the one from the homecoming photos..." ...okay, but this just felt like a strange sentence structure. There can be more than one Black boy, so I really didn't see the need for that little explanation. It threw me a fair bit because it had been generally quite diverse in a natural way beforehand.
The plot was exceptional. I was gripped from the start and felt compulsed (see what I did there?) to continue on every time I put it down.
I thought the way the paranormal politics were handled was super clever, especially for the vampire lore.
I really hope there's more to come from this world, but if not, it has made for a very satisfying standalone.

Was it loads of fun anyway? Absolutely!
This is just a fun little story, with teenage highschool drama and a big paranormal mess with vampires. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s very enjoyable.
