When You've Been Bad: Three Dark Tales by Dora Badger

These are modern fairy tales with a literary bent. Of the three, I think "Let the Bones be Burned" was my favourite, but each has something to recommend it. "Chill", the shortest of three, opens the collection with a man trapped in a cabin in frozen woods by an intelligent swarm of ice creatures. Like the other stories -- a spice shop burns down, Rapunzel hunts internet predators -- the simplistic plot description fails to capture the poetry of the voice.

This is intellectual horror, the kind that worms its way inside and stays with you. Recommended.
