Very short story about the genesis of Evan Smoak, aka "The Nowhere Man." Not bad, as I said, very short. Maybe a 20-30 minute read at best. Not much of an origin story either, just the Nowhere Man doing what he does best. We learn far more about his origins in the book that follows.

Buy a Bullet (Orphan X #1.5)
by Gregg Andrew Hurwitz

I've read book 1 and 2 in this series so far and wanted to read this short story before I went farther into the series. We get to see a bit more how Orphan X works and the job where he transitions from Orphan X to the Nowhere Man. The story gives us a tiny bit more of how he thinks and how makes sure he's not wrong to do the things he does, before he does them.

But I want to give a warning that although this book is 87 pages, only a small part of it is the short story. The rest of the book is an excerpt of one of the full Orphan X novels. Even if I had not already read that full length novel, I never read excerpts so I was disappointed to sit down to read a short story that was so much shorter than the page numbers indicated it would be. I'm not sure of the exact ratio but the short story is about 20% of the digital book and the other 80% is the excerpt. My rating is for the short story but if you pay for the book, or even check the book out of the library, you aren't getting as much story as you might expect.

An awesome short story from the world of Orphan X, I feel like it's more of a prequel though? We're shown Evan's first ever official case as The Nowhere Man. Although it's a short story, it contains a lot of depth and gives us more insight into what kind of people Evan helps.

I've read the first three novels in the Orphan X series… great reads all. According to Goodreads, this story falls between the first and second novels.

Greg Hurwitz is a master of descriptive prose. He conveys a picture to your mind without going overboard. If you want to know what a weapon can do, he can show you. If you want to know about the taste of good vodka, just read Hurwitz.

Sometimes a novelist will have difficulty moving from long form to short form writing. In this story, Evan Smoak, AKA Orphan X, AKA The Nowhere Man, goes off-script to aid an abused young woman. His short writing is as crisp and clean as are his novels.

The Kindle Edition contains an extended sample of the second book in the series, THE NOWHERE MAN. If you haven't yet read ORPHAN X I do recommend starting with the first book in the series.
