For years, since I first read this in probably 2015, I have loved it. It’s sort of like if Friday Night Lights were chick lit. Previously, it was easily 5 stars. It doesn’t hold up quite as well now. The sexual assault allegations were SO mishandled and would not fly now, 7 years after publication. Also, the age difference didn’t bother me, but the relationship-with-your-best-friends-dad DID, mostly from Clive’s POV because that’s his surrogate daughter. Also, was not long enough after Connie’s death. Not by a long shot.
So while the depiction of small town life was fun, the characters fell flatter for me this time around and It takes so much for Shea to chase after anything. Although perhaps that’s more indicative of most people. Emily Giffin has always been a fun read for me, but I’m wondering if her books are going to stop holding up — or why so many of them involve inappropriate relationships.
