One of the best poetry collections I've ever read. I'll definitely be seeking to read more of June Jordan's work after this because her voice and handle on language and rhythm is spectacular.

but I can tell you that from now on my resistance
my simple and daily and nightly self-determination
may very well cost you your life
When I reached the end of this collection, I burst out in tears. Tears in understanding, rage, sadness, and utter love. As Jericho Brown puts in his afterword, June Jordan’s work asks and answers a fundamental question: Can a poem love you? And there is a resounding yes that echos throughout.

I loved this almost too much to describe. From now on I am only reading poetry that reads like music. A new favorite poet for sure and I can't wait to devour more of her work.
