Very interesting world building, but the narrative voice didn’t really suit it, kind of annoying tone. Will probably read the next one though to find out what happens.

I just can’t keep reading. This book is so 8+. The writing, the dialogue… I loved this book when I was ten, but at sixteen I just can’t. I still love this book, but sadly I don’t think the sequel is for me.

The whole town thinks 14 year old Jane is cursed, but when she has to enter the magical Manor that connects all worlds to save her dad, she discovers the fate of not just her world, but all of them, might rest on her shoulders.

This is a total blast of a book, a magical Indiana Jones style adventure, complete with a fairly dire magical location, booby traps and frantic action scenes, irreverent wise cracks, scary bad guys and epic plot twists.

I think this is middle grade? With the main character being 14 and the story being honestly, despite the lighter tone, a bit dark at times (a fair amount of dead bodies and death, some adult alcoholism), I would put it more in the upper MG, younger YA category.

A small irk for me was an 8 year old at the beginning of the story who spoke like a 30 yo man (8 year olds just don't say things like "let's face it" and "point is,..") but unrealistic children are a particular pet peeve of mine so I don't think most people, or indeed the target audience, would notice.

The inkling of a sapphic romance that the series is somewhat known for also just didn't vibe for me chemistry-wise but there's a chance for that to develop as the series progresses so I'll hold judgement on that.

Overall though I found it a really entertaining read full of magic and adventure, it was a book I was always happy to pick back up again, and I look forward to continuing the series!

This book was so much fun. at first i was kinda bored and wasn't sure i wanted to continue but i am so glad i did. Now i may be slightly biased as this author is from the same town as me oh and i also got to meet him and he is such an awesome person. now i know saying hes from my town sounds a bit weird but when you live in rural Australia its not often a "local author" is actually from your town, it normally means 'someone who kinda lives close to your town and to make it sound better their "local".
This book is full of mystery and fun characters and honestly after the initial boredom i had i couldn't put this book down.

When a fierce quake strikes in hometown Bluehaven, and Jane’s father disappears, she is sent headfirst into an epic quest to save her dad. She must traverse through a place between worlds with booby traps galore, a treacherous labyrinth of shifting rooms, secret gateways and downright deadly beasts. But she must find him soon because she’s not the only one looking for him. A man is looking for him. A man who knows all of his weaknesses but also all of his secrets. A man who has an army.
With pyromaniac, Violet and evil prankster, Hickory by her side, Jane is about to discover that this adventure is even bigger on the inside than the outside. But all that matters in this story is that completes this quest in time. Before it is too late. Before he is gone forever.
Who knows what else she will find along the way, from foul beasts to perhaps a partner, a person in a similar situation. Who knows if she’ll even survive. That is an unexplained mystery. That, no-one knows. That mystery is for you, the reader…
