This was absolutely fascinating to read. Wilson touched on many aspects I feel are generally left out of food economy conversations (such as the link between poverty and diet in the forms of both time and money) and it was clear she tried to look at every point from multiple angles.

I agree with other commenters that the book was a bit repetitive and could have used a good extra round of editing. Still, I found it a fascinating and slightly different take on the state of our food today -- Not just how what we eat has changed, but also how our meal patterns and relationship with food and cooking has shifted. I really appreciated that the author did not overly romanticize the past and acknowledged the backbreaking, unpaid (female) labor that went into the elaborate homemade meals of yore.

She displayed a lot of sensitivity and empathy in discussing inequality in food access and the way that has disproportionately affected the health of low income and minority communities. It may not contain any groundbreaking information for people who are involved with or aware of these issues, but I found the empathy and non-judgement displayed to be really refreshing.

Overall this was a great and informative read that has gotten me really thinking about how to make more time to savor meals throughout my day, and the privilege I have to even consider that.

Woo! Bee Wilson is my GIRL. Kickstarted by dating a decade long vegan boi, I have been much more interested in why I eat what I eat, how food impacts us culturally, socioeconomically, and physically.

As someone who pretty much vacuum inhaled a bowl of popcorn while 3 episodes into the new season of Queer Eye last night, I clearly don't have the best eating habits all the time. I enjoyed how Wilson talks about how food changes have rapidly occurred over the last few decades and the implications of these large changes. Everything felt very thoroughly researched and covered and I was pumped!!
