This book was really useful to me in helping me understand the landscape of American Buddhism and what the various shades of thought are in Western adaptations. There was even a mention of the NC company that makes zafus and zabutons! Quick and entertaining read.

This was a nice story with small Buddhist lessons mixed in. It was nice to read about different retreat locations around and teachers on the East Coast in NY and PA. Moore has a comical way of telling a story and certainly you get wrapped up in what he is going to experience next. This would be a nice book for someone just starting to learn about Buddhism.

The title is the best thing about this book. The author takes a journey to find American Buddhism and ends up concluding that he is not a very good Buddhist, that he is, in fact, a lousy Buddhist. And a lousy writer?

An entertaining read of Moore's exploration of Buddhism in America and his trials and tribulations attempting to put meditation into practice. It comes across as a bit more superficial than Moore seems to have wanted. Still, he's a funny writer and easily able to express the contradictory elements of practicing Buddhism in America.
