This book was different from the other Elfhame novels because it was told in third person following Oak through the story. It gave it a different feel, but Holly Black was still able to tap into the deep and conflicting emotions that Oak deals with. He is his own worse enemy, and sees himself as both the hero and villain at the same time. I liked that Oak was able to pick up on the subtle hints, but we still see himself struggle to put them together while dealing with hard hitting events and plot twists that kept me reeling.

I loooved getting to see oaks perspective in this book!! (Miss wren’s perspective tho) Although this book wasn’t a 5 star read for me because I was a little bored up until halfway through this book, the ending and the plot twist really redeemed it. Fingers crossed we get another book in the world of elfhame bc some foreshadowing suggested it!!
