The setup for this story is a lot of fun. Kate Kane is the daughter of a faerie queen, but they don't see each other often. She's a paranormal investigator, like a detective for vampires, mages, and werewolves. She's called to a club owned by the vampire Prince of Cups after a body is found in the alley out back, and things only get more complicated after that.

Kate is snarky and kind of sweet, her friends and exes are a crazy bunch, and there is lots of fun banter. I thoroughly enjoyed about two-thirds of this book. The last bit is primarily the story of a final battle between Kate's motley crew and--well, if I tell you who, it would be a spoiler. I'm not a big fan of lengthy, detailed battle scenes in any genre, so the last third worked less well for me. But if that sounds like your catnip, this is highly recommended.

p.s. is “sweeting” a common British endearment? Maybe it is like saying “honey” or “dear” in the US. One character in particular uses it what felt like multiple times per page, and since it’s not something I’m familiar with, it read as sarcastic to me. But I don’t think it was necessarily meant that way.

This book has a pretty cool premise with a diverse cast and the world seemed to be like something fun. The mystery and world building was good for the first in a series. However, I felt dropped in the middle without really knowing anything about the characters backstories and while those backstories seemed pretty important to the plot, I always felt like I was missing something. I believe its a series so I'm hopeful that those details will be filled in eventually but that did make it very difficult to slip into the book's world. I will probably read the next one in the series eventually if it exists.

Seemed like a lesbian Dresden files.

The book is not bad and I enjoyed it, but there is a.disconnect here between the mature scenes and the, for lack of a better word, parody type jokes throughout the book. It is almost as if this was a young adult novel trying to been an adult one. The storyline is good if predictable and it is not a disappointing read, but if you're a fan of the supernatural detective series the Kassandra Lyall series is better, less repetitive, and still sticks to the lesbian genre. If you're just looking for a supernatural crime novel, pick up the Dresden Files.

Turns out femme fatales just don't work for me even when they're vamping on women. DNF, YMMV.

The end is a bit more sudden than I typically prefer, but overall a solid read. Also less spicy with a more interesting plot than I expected. Surprisingly, the least problematic werewolves of any urban fantasy series I've come across. A good sense of humor runs though the writing.

I laughed, I really did. This was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. Yet it seems that Alexis Hall’s fantasy books and I just aren’t meant to be. This was my 3rd try with one of his fantasies, and it was certainly the best of the 3, but I still finished it without caring enough about the characters to proceed to the next in the series.
