Once I started reading it (which took my a while let me tell you), it was pretty good and well-written! I hated the desperation in this time period, people working soo hard, and getting pennies every week. I feel like I've read this book before, or I've read another book that had similar things in this book (the TB, the jail, etc). Really well written and heart wrenching at times.

PLUS, the cover's awesome.

Really great historical fiction book. I know length shouldn't matter but I feel like it would be more accessible to students if it were shorter. I loved the action and adventure, and the idea that one should do anything to help their family. I also love the depiction of how difficult life during this time period was, and what was needed to survive. Another fantastic Avi novel.

Wonderful historical fiction with a great sense of place. Avi knows how to make details interesting and how to create characters who are believable and whose voices ring true to their character and place in the past.

I really enjoyed this one. Avi's narrative voice is engaging and pitch-perfect to the story's setting. He manages to bring 1893 New York to life without weighing us down with historic descriptions, and I really enjoyed the characters. I loved the Geless family, even if all the members weren't entirely fleshed out, and found most of the other characters, including Bruno and detective Donck to be interesting and complex. Quality historical fiction with a bit of mystery and a satisfying conclusion, even if not everything is entirely explained.

My son is reading this in school, so I wanted to check it out.

He seems to like it, so I‰ЫЄm not going to tell him I thought it was ok, but was kind of non-plussed.

Though I thought that it does a decent job of relaying the value of money at the time. I realized that when a place with a sign that said ‰ЫПcheap eats‰ЫП was charging $.25 for a meal, and I thought that‰ЫЄs outrageous!
