Paula Meehan, born in Dublin in 1955, is one of the women poets who was mentored by the late Eavan Boland. Boland worked for decades to bring recognition to women in a field that was overwhelmingly male. Meehan grew up in a working class inner city Dublin family. Her passion for social justice is evident in her poetry. Her poem " The Statue of The Virgin at Granard Speaks" tells the true story of a young teenage girl who was found dead in a grotto that was a shrine to the Virgin Mary.

My favorite poem of Meehan's is "Buying Winkles" about a little girl who is sent out in the evening by her mother on a Dublin evening.
There is not, as yet, a book of collected poems by Meehan, but this volume includes many of her most well known poems. Highly recommended.

“When the song that is in me is the song I hear from the world I’ll be home. It’s not written down and I don’t remember the words. I know when I heard it I’ll have made it myself. I’ll be home.”
