I burst into tears after finishing this book. I’m hard-pressed to think of another piece of writing that I’ve felt such spiritual resonance with. RIP Barry Lopez

This book feels like sitting around the fire with your grandfather as he recalls stories from his early life. Phenomenal writing throughout that explores man's relationship with nature. The essays in the second half of the collection did start feeling repetitive, apart from the harrowing account of Lopez's childhood abuse

Lopez is one of the best observers and writers of the natural world and human interactions with/in it, and the essays here are brilliant snapshots of his adventures.  The later essays also contain sobering and sad observations about his pedophile father and horror-filled stricken childhood, which are very hard to read but give context to his struggles and his success beyond childhood.
