After I left college, I put poetry in the "too hard" basket. I read for pleasure and escape, and poetry just seemed like too much effort. Too much effort to understand, therefore too much effort to appreciate. Recently, it's like someone's flipped a switch in my brain, and now I just can't get enough.

Lucky for me, New Zealand has a strong and vibrant poetry scene, and it's reflected here in [b:The Friday Poem: 100 New Zealand Poems|43310149|The Friday Poem 100 New Zealand Poems|Steve Braunias|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1564429505l/43310149._SX50_.jpg|67212797]. Braunias collects together 100 poems published in The Spinoff. There are established poets here, and young new voices too.

Some of the poems still go over my head, but I'm learning not to worry about that these days (seems to be one of the few things that are dropping off that list!). Instead I read and move on, read and move on. Many of the poems snag my attention, some strongly resonate. Some shout louder on a second or third pass.

It's a great introduction to contemporary NZ poetry.
