For any fan of underground comics and graphic novels, this is required reading. It expands the importance of Spiegelman as a formal innovator and an interesting journal of what led up to his eventual masterpiece, Maus.

I enjoyed the creativity and a look back at an avant-garde style of comics I really never encountered growing up. I found the afterword particularly interesting where Art Spiegelman talks about his influences and techniques.

This version of Breakdowns has a newer introduction and afterword that basically doubles the length of the original work. It’s interesting to see some of Spiegelman’s early work. Maus in large form (original short comic) was really nifty to see as was Prisoner of Hell Planet. I especially enjoy reading Spiegelman’s essays and hearing him talk about intent with his work. Absolutely fascinating.

Do be aware that Adults Only label is serious if you have kids around. Some fairly graphic pornographic drawings in a few of the works.

I was interested in Art Spiegelman’s development as an artist. I definitely learned that, but can see why Maus is the most enduring of his works. It’s fun to see the experiments he took with different styles of art, but many of the comics are confusingly dark and meta. I loved learning about the artist more than the work itself.

Great combination of reprints framed in new material with Spiegelman exploring his place in the growth of comics to a "respectable" art.

Interesting story and art work.
The cover says "adults only" and that's a good warning.

“Panels can be inset into bigger panels to show different points in space simultaneously! Repeating panels can freeze the flow of time! Time is an illusion that can be shattered in comics! Showing the same scene from different angles freezes it in time by turning the page into a diagram—an orthographic projection!”
