I read Monument 14 and it didn't go over big with me, but this story, this blew me away. This is what should have been at the beginning of Monument 14, this is what should have started the story and this is what would have brought my review of book one to a higher level.

A bit scary. Why? Because I could see reality mixed with fiction. I could see people in our government going this far and farther. You don't want to think about it, but you have to wonder how they come up with the things they do. How do they know the effects on humanity? This is how, live test subjects.

Ms. Laybourne, I applaud you with this strong, scary, and totally awesome introduction to the happenings in Monument 14 and now I'm looking forward to the sequel.

This was very, very well written. Don't read if you have a propensity towards nightmares and despair over the depravity of men.

I wish they hadn't used Marines to test the chemical warfare, it was sad even though they were considered criminals. I already have a quarter of the way into book 1 and I am glad I read this first so that I understand what is happening.

Ooooh that was really good. Very interesting to see where the compound came from and how it ties into the Monument 14 kids as well! Did we know that Brayden's father was involved with testing? If so, I didn't remember that! Just the perfect pick-me-up I needed before starting the last book in this trilogy!

Turns out I read this accidentally a few weeks ago, in a Tor.com anthology. Unlike the following novel, Monument 14, this was actually a great read, well developed, well paced, intriguing. I remembered wanting to read more. (Which made for weird deja vu when I read Monument, since the biochemical weapon in it sounded JUST LIKE THIS ONE, but I didn't make the connection.)

Some people already pointed out things about the "gypsy", "Croatian or Serbian" or "adult with freckles". I think they shouldn't be part of this story because I feel like they don't add anything to it, not even like "hey this character sucks".
Generally it was a brutal but nice story; I've read it after two first parts of Monument 14 so it wasn't that shocking as it could be for me if I've read it before them.

A few of these sentences were . . .problematic, but I’m giving the benefit of the doubt. Laybourne’s Monument 14 doesn’t give off this same attitude at all.

If you haven’t read M14, this story probably won’t hold much interest in you. If you have, it’s a nice little facet to add to our view of the story.

Creepy. This novella shows the testing of the vital formula which causes destruction in the series. You can find the story here http://www.tor.com/stories/2012/05/dress-your-marines-in-white.
