Man this was a chore to finish... cheesy, poorly written, and boring. I almost didn’t want to finish. The story thinks cartoonishly manic scientists are scary. Also, the overly sexual behavior was just ridiculous. There was a multitude of unnecessary details that somehow made this already short story feel too long.

This would’ve been a 1 star if not for the interesting concept.

Amazing. I'm honestly speechless. This book had me like 😱 the whole time and I loved it! It's definitely not for everyone, cause it's a super super dark book, but for anyone who likes that stuff, it's a great read!

My guilty pleasure is twisted horror stories and this book lived up!! Probably the most original and just plain tormenting book I've read. Great imaginative plot and unbelievable weirdness. Let me just say that my mom was disgusted when I was telling my sister part of the book; which means it passes the "too freaky for moms" test.

Gore, nastiness, and more. This was an awesome horror novel that kept you wanting more. It was sad and bleak, but a very good read, nonetheless.

I really liked the main character, Mike Fox, despite his obvious flaws. But I like that, I like the concept of a very flawed hero, which is exactly what Mike Fox is.

Very good, and very terrifying.

While I was off put by the first person narration of the book that quickly went away as flew through this book. We really get a feel for what the character is going through and the horror he experinces we feel it also. For a debut novel this was a great read.

So, this is not a perfect book, but It was an enjoyable read. The prose is simple and the first person perspective works well with the subject matter. The story is very twisted and graphic (if don’t like body horror you won’t like this book, it is NOT Frankenstein despite some similar themes).

The first half was really well written, the pacing was perfect with just enough suspense and hints at what was coming that I couldn’t put it down. When the shit began to hit the fan you already had a good idea of what was going to happen, but it was still pretty jaw dropping when it did and there were some clever elements added to up the ante and keep the reader guessing. It was largely that momentum that carried me through the second half however - not that it was “bad”, but the pacing in particular started to go off the rails with some parts seemingly skimmed over and others dragging on for too long. In addition the first person perspective wasn’t used as effectively for the second half of the story.

You won’t likely learn anything here - it barely scratches at the surface of themes like identity and ethics in medicine without ever really exploring them. Still, if you want a gory, twisted, quick, fun (for a horror fan!) read then this book is worth your time.
