Fun and enlightening. The wizards of Unseen University get stuck on roundworld, a non-magical world they created in the first The science of discworld, but they aren't alone. Elves have invaded roundworld and the wizards decide to stay to save roundworld from the evil elves. As with the first book the story is used to further explain scientific topics, with each story chapter followed by a science chapter.
Both are highly enjoyable, though naturally the wizards are funnier. The balance between story and non-fiction falls heavily in favour of the latter, which can on occassion be a bit too lengthy in comparison.

Great installment.

I've been totally enamored with Pterry and Discworld for well over 15 years (since i was a wee free lad). The adage "write what you know" perfectly outlines the breadth of Sir Terry's wisdom in that he writes about EVERYTHING!

Fans of every stripe would agree that stories on the Disc bring something unique to the bloated genre of fantasy, and the contributions of Ian Stewart & Jack Cohen only goes to enforce what we already know; that for all the fun and silliness, Terry builds his stories upon a solid foundation of a an exhaustive cultural capital.

What better way is there to get learned about the wonderful world of SCIENCE (which sometimes feels even more far-fetched than the dalliances of wizards, trolls and boorish gods), than to have the whip-sharp wit of Terry Pratchett guide you through the history of our strange and humble Roundworld?

I love time travel stories where the protagonist has to tinker and fix major past events to ensure the proper unraveling of history. When it's the good old boys of UU at it, you know you're in for a bloody good treat.

I read the first two installments several years ago, brushing passed the heady dollops of science, and even without that (which admittedly is pretty much the main point behind these books) it's still worthy of the canon. This time round, I've found that the concise history of all things 'thinky' enhances the experience a heck of a lot more. Ian and Jack have proven themselves to be fun communicators of their passion and are clear fans of Terry's; effortlessly dropping in a plethora of examples from the series to illustrate their points.

If you are new to the series however, it might be worthwhile giving The Science's a miss this time round. But don't be fooled, they're every bit as relevant to the understanding of Terry as a beautifully, big-minded bastard as much as his other, more conventional stories are.

The "science of" chapters are filled with anti-semitism and other concerning opinions about oppressed peoples. Which was very disappointing, because the story chapters were entertaining.
Won't be reading another Pratchett book.

Great book that changes gears from part science to story. This makes it challenging to stay engaged but the book is solid regardless. I understand the pacing and flow. However, that was also my biggest problem with the book.

A bit all over the place in comparison to book 1, but still very entertaining.

A fun Discworld novella! It isn't a groundbreaking or particularly Impressive Discworld story, but I still had a lot of fun with it!
There's a lot of social science focused in this book, though there's a very Euro-centric view of 'civilization', which some of the books attempts to back peddle on, but it still lands there.
