This book focuses on finding meaning in your life when you feel meaningless. This type of writing is very contemplative and is the type of book that needs to reader to sit in peace with it. There are many life lessons scattered throughout the novel but the biggest one is finding happiness in the now. Many characters struggle with career goals and family goals and lose focus on what actually makes them happy. While trying to trudge their way through life, they use the bookshop as a meeting place of community. Books bring them together even when they don't realize they need them. Through the power of reading they are able to find what they want in life and are able to create balance. "If more people start to read, they'll be able to empathize with the pain of others and the world will become a better place sooner."

It took me a while to finish this book but it was a book I wanted to take my time with and absorb its messages.

This book was soothing to read because I resonated with its direction- in that the stories told are stories about people who find their own pace and direction, people who support others, celebrate the small efforts and find their footing again.

It is a pivotal-type story. As the author put it: Everyone in the novel is taking small steps forward, whether it’s learning something new, or making a change to their lives. What they’re doing might be far from achieving what society deems as success, but they’re growing and changing through their consistent efforts – taking several steps away from where they started off. How others judge where they stand – be it high or low, good or bad – doesn’t matter to them. The fact that they’ve progressed, and are happy where they are, is sufficient.

I enjoyed the overall themes and plot of the book, with some beautifully written moments of self-reflection for a couple of the characters - but the pace felt extremely slow and at times stationary.
