I enjoyed the short stories. I generally like her snarky/ first person writing. Only thing i didnt like is that for some stories i wanted MORE but she never gave it.

Probably would've been 5 stars if I weren't so pop-culture clueless - I just didn't have references for many subjects in some of the essays. But I like her style and believe Gay's voice an important one. Plus, the idea that we can be feminists but often be bad at it is so necessary to hear.

"I embrace the label of bad feminist because I am human. I am messy. I'm not trying to be an example. I am not trying to be perfect. I am not trying to say I have all the answers. I am not trying to say I am right. I am just trying--trying to support what I believe in, trying to do some good in this world, trying to make some noise with my writing while also being myself."
I found this introduction, and Gay's attitude throughout the collection, very refreshing. It's nice to have such an amazing writer say it's okay that we're not perfect, no matter how enlightened we try to be, and that we can still make progress even though we're human. I wouldn't give each and every one of these essays a five-star rating (I'm looking at you, Sweet Valley High chapter--you're a three), but the collection as a whole gets five stars because it's so well-written and thought-provoking.

I really wanted to like this book but it really disappointed me. I was expecting to feel empowered and educated and it was just a long and rude rant, and the majority of the book had absolutely nothing to do with feminism. I thought the point was to empower women and tell the audience that it’s okay to not be perfect but this book feeds into the negative narratives towards feminism and continues the negative stereotypes. This book was really hard to finish and it wasn’t worth it.

Frig me. How much did I love this book? How much did I need it in my life? How much do I believe EVERYONE needs to read this book?
Answer: A whole fricking lot.
An excellent, thought provoking and well written collection of essays that I will own, treasure and reread for years to come.
