The Devouring Gray was a completely spontaneous read. I wanted to read more YA thrillers, and spotted this book on sale. I thought it had an interesting plot and the edition I got has pink-colored sprayed pages, so I definitely had to get it.

This book tells the story of four teenagers who lives in a small town called Four Paths. The four of them are the descendants of the town's founders, thus why they have powers. The town is gripped by fear of a Beast who lurks in the woods, especially now that bodies are appearing. Can these teenagers find a way to stop the Beast from claiming another victim?

I had no expectations of this book and I was pleasantly surprised! The book instantly gripped my attention and piqued my curiousity. I couldn't stop reading once I started! The creepy atmosphere was built right from the first paragraph. I really enjoyed reading the story through different point of views. The main characters (Harper, Justin, Violet, May, and Isaac) were diverse, strong and relatable. One of them, Isaac Sullivan, has become one of my favorites! He loves to read, need I say much? What I love about these characters is they all have their own share of grief, but would still help each other.

I didn't know this book is the first of a series. I am so excited to read the second book, The Deck of Omens, and read more about Four Paths! Actually, I might be more excited to read about Isaac!

I rate this book 4 stars and would happily recommend it for YA thriller readers!

I forgot how much I loved the characters. I loved the dynamics of how they were all intertwined in so many ways. I also loved a lot of the quips back and forth. The characters were just so... Real. I also love the world building. I seriously wish I could hop into the book and live there... Without the dying all grizzly and... Very painful.

2.5 Stars. Slow pacing, overly convenient plot devices, and an overall lack of cohesion. The characters were flat. The setting was the book's best asset but even that got lost in the shuffle.

After having really enjoyed one of the author's other books, I spent ages trying to find this in bookstores. It was definitely worth the effort, I read it in one sitting, unable to put it down. All the characters were incredibly sympathetic, although I do have to say that I wasn't really a fan of the author's attempt to weave in a slightly complicated love square, I do think that having one relationship would have been enough, and the rest remaining friends. This is the first of two (I think there's only two) and if I had had the second book when I finished reading this, I think I would have started reading it immediately, unfortunately I did not and so I will have to find it at a later date. I really hope that Isaac's story is more explored in the second book, as his lack of development was a little disappointing.
