Because this is an academic study, the tone of this book is rather dry and there are a great many statistical charts and population numbers thrown at the reader. Smyth details the rise of the Orange Order (i.e. Protestant Irish) and how the group rose and lost power in the city of Toronto.
It is an interesting book if you have visited the city (or I suppose live there) because you can still see physical manifestations of what Smyth is detailing in the city itself. Of particular interest is the conflict with the Catholic Irish shortly after the Second World War.
But it is a rather dry read.
