One of two shorts that I'm reading by the same author, A Horrified MInd is an easy to read but fairly simple constructed fiction that stomps directly into Lovecraft territory. Given its Chess-and-Cthulhu overtones, I found it quite enjoyable though I'm really not sure the inclusion of anything Cthulhuian really helped this story along. It would have been just as good without it. That said, it did not offend my sensibilities with the references like many Cthulhuian wannabe stories do. So, yeah, it was the perfect read for a slow moment at work.
