There is an unassuming richness to this book. I found myself often thinking "how could a person write this?!" No matter what little detail of an entry point you choose, it'll unfold a small world of consideration. The cover of my copy says "Everything is made up, nothing is arbitrary." Barring one small complaint, that is abundantly true. Add another to the list of deep-and-necessary-politico-social-commentary-masquerading-as-sci-fi. And for anyone concerned, it's not anarchist propaganda and it isn't preachy.

I honestly did not like the writing in this book, the characters, or the misogyny blatantly displayed. This was a pick for my book club and my wife made it further than I did and reported back some very disturbing/graphic use of sexual assault in a later part of the book and both of us DNF'd because we felt that the violence and objectification of the woman was not conducive to the story at all and just furthered the decent of this book into unreadability.

This book made me think a lot. There's a lot of rumination on topics like time, what binds people together, anarchist politics, and the meaning of freedom. I think the characters are complex and not entirely lovable, which I enjoy sitting with. I also really love the dual timeline and searing political commentary.

My main issues with this book are the anti-indigenous terminology used throughout like "savage" and "primitive" - these are framed as bad things. I also really don't understand the sexual assault scene in this book. It is never resolved and basically forgotten after it happens. That really took away from the book for me.
