ADDICTED TO DUNE! There’s a perfectly crafted, well thought out universe in this book & I never want to leave it. But I’m also fine with staying on planet earth bc as much as (spoiler alert? If u live under a rock) Paul is a great savior, Jesus Christ is a better one

how do you even review one of the most foundational sci-fi novels of all time? this book is not for anyone new to sci-fi, and is even difficult for many seasoned sci-fi readers. but once you wade through the world building and language barrier (the only reason I didn’t give 5 stars, thank god for the glossary), the story is layered, nuanced, and captivating. The level of detail on not only the descriptions, but dialogue and internal monologues of the characters, makes this a book that you really have to analyze and digest, which I absolutely love!

For a sci-fi novel i can see why it is a cult classic in many ways. It’s super interesting and definitely challenges views from when it was written.
However, in many ways it is hard to read without cringing because of the racism, fatphobia, sexism, and homophobia apparent in the writers views seen through his writing. as an anthropology student, it checks every part of the “noble savage” checklist as well as fetishization. Not to mention the only gay character being a  ”disgusting” fat pedophile. While in many ways it challenges the trope, it is still a white man savior who “becomes” native but a better kind of native because he is white.
I’m not saying books have to be unproblematic or pure, it’s just that in 2024 it is hard to read this without every 20 pages going “oof” at the classic biases written into character design and motivations.
Ignoring these big issues tho, i was very hooked on wanting to know what happened next!
