A lovely meld of long-form journalism, memoir, travel diary, history, and myth from a land I deeply desire to visit. My desire is deepened for having read Sagaland.

Absolutely loved this, no idea why I didn't add it to my Goodreads when I listened to it. I'd love to go to Iceland one day.

A really interesting and different kind of book. Part memoir, part travel series, part history and mythology. This is a book that slips in and out of different genres, all to explain the culture, history and stories of Iceland. Definitely worth a read/listen - the audiobook I listened to was by the authors themselves and added something extra to the tales.

A curious blend of personal story, ancient history, and mythology all intriguingly told in alternating chapters by Richard and Kari.
The Sagas of Iceland are woven through the contemporary saga of Kari's life and search for acknowledgement from his father and resultant recognition by a country he clearly loves. Richard's role as supportive friend and fascinated outsider opens these stories up, making them accessable and gives us a unique view of a land seeped in history.
I sometimes struggled to get my head around the sheer scope of time that these sagas cover - the fact you can know the names and personalities of people who lived over 1000 years ago just blows my mind!
