Only four stars because they only spent about 20 pages talking about cheetah poop and also I wanted to read more about HiFi.

The "Scientists in the Field" books are interesting, have phenomenal illustrations, and makes the stories they are sharing accessible to their readers.

In another beautiful book in the Scientist in the Field series, readers can learn about the efforts to keep cheetahs safe from a world that threatens them. The dramatic decline in the number of cheetahs in the last hundred years have led some scientists to dedicating their lives to the study and protection of these creatures. The book details efforts to help people understand cheetahs and be able to work with them with efforts such as giving farmers dogs to protect their lands so the farmers don't feel the need to kill cheetahs.

Chasing Cheetahs: The Race To Save Africa's Fastest Cat has beautiful full-page photographs of cheetahs and the people who study them, pages of easy facts, and a story to read full of real-life environmental heroes. Readers will learn a lot about the scientific, cultural, and political process of protecting endangered animals as well as a lot about cheetahs. Young readers will be able to be inspired by the gorgeous photographs, the lives of the scientists, and the beautiful animals themselves.

Another great contribution to the Scientists in the Field series. Learned a lot about the cheetah (they have almost no sense of smell!?) and loved the idea of using dogs, goats and sheep to save them from extinction in Africa. You'll see what I mean if you read it!

Sy Montgomery is such a good science writer. I am an adult who thought I knew a bit about cheetahs before I read this - but - I learned lots. And her description of how DNA is extracted was fascinating. Great entry in the wonderful "scientist in the field' series.

Overall this is a good book, but there were moments when I wondered about the editing: it felt as though there were things left out that led to jumpy transitions, and the photos didn't always match the text (which meant hunting for the corresponding information). Still, the younger readers that are this series target will probably not notice and the information contained within will be valuable.

Another stellar entry in the Scientists in the Field series. As usual, it had me peppering my husband with "Did you know?" statements throughout. Whether or not it's actually shorter than previous titles in the series, it feels succinct and makes for a quick read. The balance between the main narrative, following the work of a particular ground-breaking cheetah conservancy in Namibia, and sidebars full of additional information about cheetahs and the various scientific processes at work is well-executed and makes for a fluid read. Cheetahs are really fascinating animals, and the incredible work that the conservancy is doing - educating farmers, raising and selling guard dogs, rehabbing cheetahs, and more - demonstrates the holistic perspective that really makes a difference in these kinsd of conservation efforts. A favorite of the year so far, and an easy sell to any young fan of big cats.
