this book is about some outsiders traveling somewhere new and finding family, somewhat in the spirit of the goddess of fried okra and to wong foo, thanks for everything. Bo is our unreliable narrator, with a unique voice - at times, I found him difficult to follow. Bo's on the way to finally meet his father, joined on the road by his mother and her husband (who's also Bo's boyfriend - and they've all been living together; it's a mess). Bo shares his father's interest in landscaping and running away from people.

the characters are fully realized, with a sense of real history in their interactions and distinct voices. there's little exposition, so the reader gradually learns about Bo, his relationships with his mother and Troy (the boyfriend), and his father's new family. sometimes another character questions Bo's memory, giving the reader a little better sense of what actually happened. the story is about abandonment and belonging, loyalty and love and loss. I found the ending uplifting and hopeful.
