Absolutely gorgeous. Poignant, lyrical, resonant, and deeply, immensely important. I intend to treasure this book for years to come.

A collection of heart-warming Scottish fairytales with a queer twist that made my heart swell with happiness and light. My favourites were Mairead, February, Gentle Annie and Kelpie. Also bonus for the inclusion of neopronouns in Gentle Annie, it really made my body thrum with pride.

Incredible! Stunning and accessible poetry for all ages (but especially kids/teens). Wain lifts up the queerness that is often inherent in folktales and reimagines the classic stories that we tell our children. Great way to learn about Scottish folkore, and you can find similarities to other cultural traditions as well. Should be in schools all over. Beautifully illustrated, great gift!

I really enjoyed this book of poems, despite it being aimed at teens. I'm a big fan of folktale reimaginings, and it was great to see them transformed into queer poetry. The illustrations are also lovely! Some of the poems read as a little stilted, which is why it's dropped a star for me.

I wish each one was just a bit longer but it is understandable for poems to remain short. The illustrations are gorgeous. I wasn't familiar with every folklore figure here but the ones I did recognize were wonderful. These poems are accessible enough for the average 13+ year old to be able to understand, though for full enjoyment you'll want to be familiar with the original folklore(or the available folklore).
