Easily one of my favorite books. I had to read this for my Native American Religion class. The novel demonstrates a beautiful, harmonious marriage between traditional Christian theology and Native American spiritualism, mirroring the protagonist's inner struggle to identify with her own heritage. Beautifully written. It is certainly Susan Power's invitation for all to join the conversation.

This is so good and so beautiful. I can't wait to read more by the author.

The storyline was very disjointed. I kept thinking that many of the diverging storylines would make better short stories. The writing is lyrical and beautiful at times, but ultimately I had to force myself to read it. Read for book club.

there's astounding beauty in this book and it made me cry several times. i'd rate it higher, but the choice to have Candace be part-Jewish part-Mohawk really rubbed me the wrong way-- because it's a fascinating intersection and Powers uses it to... tell a story about the Virgin Mary??

This was a beautiful story, but I wish it was a beat longer. I wanted more time to get to know the characters more and diver deeper into their struggles and stories. I did, however, appreciate the attention to the past and how that related to their stories.

Susan Power name is fitting: she writes with power. Sacred Wilderness is a wonderful book. It condenses hundreds of years of personal history into only a couple hundred pages, and tells them with such honesty that it is easy to forget a word of it is fiction. Those well read in other Native American authors, as well as those with extensive knowledge of Native American history, arts, & cultures will get much more out of this than the casual novel reader. Epic in scope, and poignantly personal, this book deserves a thorough read.

2 1/2 stars. I had mixed feelings about this one. There were moments it was interesting and I liked the character of Gladys and her relationship with Jules. I also liked the contemporary Native viewpoint. But there were many other moments where it just got too convoluted and I wanted the story to be over. Too many stories and it read at times like an Oprah Winfrey pick from the 90s. Which isn't always a bad thing, but it isn't always a good thing either.
