‘Private #1 suspect’: another great addition to the Private franchise.

Earlier additions to the Private franchise

I read the first Private book on holiday; my dad had bought it after some guy recommended it from work and he didn’t get the chance to read it. After finishing all of my books that I’d brought, sat on the veranda was Private by James Patterson. I love a good crime thriller and found this was right up my street. I don’t know if it was the summer breeze or the curse of the sequel but I don’t think the other books in the franchise could stand up against the first one.
SHAME, REALLY!

Plot

Okay, Jack Morgan is the #1 suspect after he finds Colleen Molloy murdered on his bed in his house with a witness that saw him do it. Jack can’t have done it because he had just got off the plane from some meeting and had a shower so it can’t be him. So who was it? If you’ve read the previous books then you know who it is. Anyway, Jack has to prove that it wasn’t him despite the LAPD’s persistence that it was him. On top of that, Jack’s team in L.A are “helping” the mafia, assisting a celeb and following a hotel serial killer.

Characters

Jack Morgan- he is the protagonist and for me to read a book, I have to fall in love with them. Well, I love Jack Morgan. He has boyish charms that Patterson portrays throughout the book- nice. Yes he has a sex drive of a… a man but come on that’s why we love him. He is set up to be loved and I can’t help it.

Del Rio, Cruz and Scotty- they aren’t developed enough through the book to have paragraphs separately but Del Rio is the main man because he is Jack’s best friend. Cruz is a Spanish senorita that his way with the ladies, well it is L.A; it wouldn’t be the Californian dream otherwise? Scotty is the new guy that I just have little to say about expect he is a ninja.

Justine- I loved her in the first one because of her development through the “school girl killings”, I really enjoyed the complexity of that case and missed that with Justine. I really thought the cases were not up to their usual scratch. I don’t know if I missed the POV from the murderer but I felt the killers were put to me on the plate. :(

Your typical James Patterson book - fast paced, page turning, can't put down, kind of read. I liked this one more than some of his but less than others. I was really intrigued with Jack's storyline. I mean, you knew he didn't kill Colleen and make it so obvious, but who did? Also, I love that there are all the little side cases so you don't get bored/stuck with just one going on.

Jack Morgan has just returned from LA to discover his former lover murdered in his bed. Despite having been out of town he's the prime suspect. His PI agency, Private, is in the middle of investigating a series of murders at 5 star hotels, and chasing down a stolen van full of pharmaceuticals for a mob boss, so they're already stretched thin. Proving his innocence has to take priority though, and Jack soon realises he's up against some very clever enemies.

I don't know why I always leave it so long between reading Patterson books, they're always a gripping, quick and enjoyable read, even if they are sometimes a bit far fetched!

This is the second book in the Private series, and I must admit that I am enjoying reading about investigations that aren't bound by the same rules (or cost restrictions!) as most police procedural novels.

Jack Morgan isn't a character I'm particularly enamoured with. He's in bed with the mob, regardless of how much he claims to want otherwise, and his treatment of the women in his life is pretty poor. He can't seem to understand why they have issues with this, but I would have thought it's pretty clear!

That aside the book is everything you'd expect. It's fast paced and full of action. Given that the next book seems to focus on a different set of characters in an entirely different location I don't think it matters too much that the main character isn't exactly loveable.
