She doesn't have the writing skill to support the lore she's trying to achieve, unfortunately. Much slower than Fourth Wing and lacked the driving force that the will-they-won't-they romance lent to the first book. Absent that aspect and with Yarros trying to broaden the world to wedge in new plot points and conflict for the third book, the elements that held FW together for me despite the subpar writing fell apart a bit in the sequel.

Immediately started this after finishing Fourth Wing. Extremely pissed about the ending.

There’s a lot of plot holes that I’m still reeling over how this all happened.

This is probably a pretty generous 3 stars but I honestly think of this was just a YA fantasy it’d be fine. Not great, but fine. The dragons are cool, the war college setting works well enough, the political intrigue isn’t anything ground-breaking but I think it’s good enough for YA….but the romance went from a bit silly in Fourth Wing to so freaking stupid in this book. Violet is so annoying, the fights she and Xaden have every other chapter are inane, and istg if he calls her Violence one more time.
I don’t understand how someone who is primarily a romance writer is so bad at writing romance.

Loved it even more than the first book, here we can see how all the information really takes a toll on Violet, she seems more human. Love it w all my ❤️

Only positive in this novel are the dragons. The humans and the plot are pretty predictable and not too memorable
