I definitely want to go back and do a physical read with annotations I feel like there are good phrases and lessons that I would like to take better notes on

One of the most personally meaningful books I’ve ever read. I didn’t know anything about Bruce Lee but it’s clearly wrong to box him into just a martial arts actor label. The beauty of his daughter’s writing and of his philosophies has left me with a view of life I hope to never lose.

I didn’t realize how much I could love self-help books, if you can call this one, until I picked this up.

Type of read: Weekend/Lunchtime read.

What made me pick it up: Part of the August TN R.E.A.D.S. challenge is to read a book by
or about an athlete. I was searching for a book and I loved the fact that 'Be Water, My Friend' was a bit of a different take on a book from an athlete.

Overall rating: Definitely not what I was thinking of as a book by/about an athlete when I started but I appreciate that Lee was upfront about what the book was and wasn't from the very first chapter. I enjoyed seeing both her and her father's perspectives on being the best version of ourselves. 'Be Water, My Friend' is more a self-help/self-realization book than it is any sort of memoir on Lee as an athlete and individual and I actually really appreciated that. But it wasn't self-help in the 'do this and you'll find happiness' it was self-help in the 'this is what my father believed, this is what he did, this is how he lived and that worked for his peace.' I would recommend 'Be Water, My Friend' for those looking for different perspective with a bit of Bruce Lee knowledge and history sprinkled in.

Bruce and Shannon Lee are correct when they say that everything is dependent on our mindset. When the same event happens to two different people, their reactions will be vastly different, and the key to that is in their way of thinking. This books encourages you to see things in a different way, and approach things with a different mindset. Sometimes when we can’t see the woods from the trees, we just need a little reminder that we’re actually in a forest.

This is a book I read when I was feeling lost.
To take a quote from Alice in Wonderland - it takes all the running you can do to stay in the same place.
I really felt that at the time, and maybe still do. But at least the way forwards is a bit brighter now.

This is a book I’m certain I’ll come back to and read again and again.
